LSN and BT join forces to launch BT Qualify, which makes vocational qualification assessment easier and faster

Expanding the functionality of online assessment available to UK colleges, LSN and BT have today launched BT Qualify, a new e-Portfolio system which greatly simplifies the process of gaining vocational qualifications for students and their assessors nationwide.

Bringing together the experts in learning with a global leader in technology, LSN and BT have developed a straight-forward technology platform geared around helping further education students build the body of evidence necessary for their qualification. A key feature of the product is its simple user interface which gathers key information and functions onto one screen, making it easy to master and quick and simple to upload evidence and map it against the qualification requirements.

The system provides maximum flexibility for assessors, who can work both online and offline, according to the availability of the internet. They can upload a wide range of rich media content and map it across multiple qualification criteria. BT Qualify supports collaborative working, allowing learners, verifiers and employers to access their portfolio simultaneously from anywhere with an internet connection. The system comes pre-loaded with hundreds of key qualifications, including all major NVQs, and other qualifications can be added on request.

John Stone, Chief Executive of LSN, says: “With each NVQ typically being based around several hundred qualification criteria, gathering and compiling all the evidence required can be no mean feat – for students or their tutors. BT Qualify streamlines the process into a simple online system, accessible 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, wherever you are. Gone are the days when assessors have to carry round dozens of heavy portfolios or can’t work because the portfolio is with the student or back at the college. It also makes it easier than ever before to map evidence across multiple qualifications and their criteria and to track student progress.” Student progress is a theme throughout the system, with the home screen displaying the learners’ progress as a percentage of the requirements of the portfolio. The ability to show only the criteria that are yet to be fulfilled is available at the touch of a button.

LSN’s dialogue with college management has had a strong bearing on the design of BT Qualify. As a result the system provides a wide range of real-time management reports at individual, cohort and college-wide level.

Sally Taylor, Head of Learning at BT Learn Diverse, concludes: “Technology has been enabling modern colleges to offer individuals more personalised learning solutions for the last decade, and e-Portfolios are the next logical step forward in enhancing the student experience. BT Qualify was developed over a number of years, and represents a robust, cost-effective alternative for colleges fed up with the time and resource implications of managing paper-based assessment portfolios. We are excited to be in the position to help vocational learners get full benefit from assessment management technology.”
