Retailers’ IT spending remains constant but they’re planning for growth as the economy improves

The latest IT in Retail Reports by Martec International, shows that retailers have learned to cope with tighter budgets during the recession. But as the economic horizon brightens many are planning for growth.


The report is an analysis of the systems used by the 100 leading UK retailers 2010-11. This is the eighth annual study carried out by Martec and is undertaken by interviewing CIOs in the leading retail organisations. The results represent 75 per cent of the UK retail market by sales.


This year, the survey also features for the first time a report on the systems used by the 100 leading non-food retailers.

Key findings uncovered in the report include:

  • the latest outlook on IT spend and how the recession has impacted budgets
  • IT spend by sector, comparing the 100 leading retailers as well as a new non-food retailer report
  • future investment plans and evidence that retailers are planning to invest in replacement or new technology
  • latest investment priorities – what’s most important for CIOs today
  • importance of multichannel and the increasing significance of non-store sales.
